‘Terminate The Rate’ Petition

Started by BT and 3 Mobile UK earlier this year, Terminate the Rate is aiming to reduce Mobile Termination Rates (MTRs) to reflect their actual cost. If you’re unsure when it comes to your MTRs, have a look at this post which sums it all up.

The campaign to date has been a great success. Since starting in May the petition has gained over 114,000 signatures, been joined by 258 Members of Parliament and gained the support of over 60 organisations, businesses and councils.

And today, Terminate the Rate will be handing in their petition to regulatory body Ofcom, a significant landmark for the campaign. The news has been covered by the BBC and The Independent, both of which feature the reaction of John Petter, MD Consumer, BT Retail:

“This petition is only the first stage in an ongoing campaign to show how MTRs stifle competition and increase the cost of calling mobiles – our goal remains for them to be set according to what they actually cost.”

We’re keen supporters of the initiative – after all, it’s all about giving consumers a fair deal – and we’re very much looking forward to seeing the outcome of the support the campaign has gathered.

3 Announce Partnership With HTC Hero And Spotify

Exciting news comes hot off the press this morning as 3 Mobile UK have announced a new partnership with Spotify and the HTC Hero.

By doing this, 3 have become the first UK operator to bundle Spotify premium into a compelling tariff and handset offer.

It’s an award winning combination. We were lucky enough towitness first hand as Spotify won Innovation of the Year at last week’s T3 Gadget Awards. On the very same evening HTC Hero picked up Gadget of the Year and Phone of the Year.

Bringing the two technologies together on 3’s network is a tasty prospect.

Faisal Galaria, Global Head of Business Development at Spotify says:

“We’re intent on offering people a high quality, simple yet powerful portable music experience at a fair price and we’re thrilled to be working with 3 to bring Spotify to UK music fans.”

We’ll be posting further reaction and comment as the news spreads so watch this space.

MiFi Reviews

3 Mobile UK’s new Mifi service has been a big talking point of late. The opportunity to simultaneously connect multiple devices to a single mobile broadband connection has some interesting implications – one of which is summed up by Andrew Orlowski over at The Register:

“…a month with the MiFi – courtesy of network 3 UK – has prompted me to think the unthinkable, and consider ditching my iPhone. Or at least go far enough down that road to do the sums”

Why? Because “With a MiFi, I’d have a data connection wherever there’s a 3 network connection… So [iPod] Touch applications such as Mail, Maps and Safari suddenly become viable alternatives”

Elsewhere, Loudmouthman has posted a review drawing our attention to a couple of possible issues with the device:

“To connect the device to your laptop and again to the internet requires several button presses and frankly these are not the easiest things to see negotiate [sic].”

He goes on to discuss a lack of intuitive design with the LED display – “blue for connected and red for “it’s working” but I don’t know why”.

The LED niggle is echoed at Trusted Reviews in their piece on the device.

However, in all three instances there are major positives being discussed and top of the list are speed, network coverage and the flexibility that the device brings to users.

Which is why Computer Shopper have named 3 mobile broadband their “editor’s choice”, awarded it 5 stars out of 5, and called it the “undisputed champion” of the space, and why Adonis Mobile said that for users needing it – “there is no better way of getting them that [wifi] connection than this 3 MiFi Dongle”.

T3 Gadget Awards

Fresh off the back of their recent awards success, and having barely had a chance to dust off their tuxedos or polish their dancing shoes, 3 are heading to the T3 Gadget Awards tonight.

Although T3 don’t have any awards for mobile networks themselves, 3 will nonetheless be paying close attention, particularly when the Phone of the Year winner is announced.

After all, they currently carry 3 of the 10 nominated handsets – theSony Ericsson C905, the Blackberry Bold and the Nokia N97. It’s a competitive category, with the HTC Hero and Apple iPhone 3GS also vying for the gong.

Further special mention should go to Blackberry Bold who are not only up for Phone of the Year, but also nominated for Commuter Gadget, Gadget You Can’t Live Without and Work Gadget of the Year.

You can have a look at all the shortlists here.

Three Win Mobile Choice Consumer Award 2009

At the Mobile Choice Consumer Awards 2009 3 Mobile UK triumphed taking home the title for best mobile broadband package.

It was the bundle of a Samsung N130 netbook with a 15GB data allowance and 100 free texts for £25 per month that saw the award head 3’s way. The judges said of the package,

“A mighty 15GB makes this tariff a market leader, reflecting the requirements of real life like those data-sapping media transfers. Featuring an additional 100 free texts per month, this two year deal from 3 costs just £25 per month, and makes 3 the clear winner of Best Mobile Broadband package.”

In response to the success Marc Allera, sales and marketing director for 3 said,

“We are delighted to be recognised as winners for our Mobile Broadband year on year and to be able to offer our customers deals that are great value for money.”

Last year 3 won the Tariff of the Year award and as Broadband Expert states this most recent victory is another ‘feather in the cap’ of the provider as it aims to make mobile communication accessible to all.

INQ Mini 3G Launches!

Today sees the launch of the INQ Mini 3G on 3UK. There’s already been plenty of chatter and overviews of the device that is available in 3 stores, online and over the phone.

Engadget Mobile has an extensive review with a picture gallery and video of the Mini in action. Trusted Reviews also has a video showing the depth of the device’s social-networking integration. Other sites that have covered the new INQ on the block areElectricpig, MobileChoice and Tech65, so be sure to give them all the once over.

The official side of the launch can all be found at the 3 media centre, with details on features and tariffs, along with a quote from Charlotte Blanchard, 3’s director of products and services,

“We’re committed to making the Mobile Internet affordable and easy to use for consumers. Our goal is to offer consumers the best Mobile Internet experience, and INQ’s new products are a key part of that story.”

Smartphones Beat The Recession

In a feature posted today on the BBC site it has been stated that smartphones such as the Apple iPhone, the Nokia N97 and the HTC Hero are all proving extremely popular despite the recession. The ability to store all of your media in one place and the added extra of music, games and apps is proving a strong selling tool, encouraging consumers to dig deep despite the economic climate.

“The smartphone is really not a smartphone. It’s really a GPS device, it’s a camera, and a video camera and a place that you can play games and you can browse, and oh by the way, you can make calls.” Says Google boss Eric Schmidt.

Over the next few years we will see more and more exciting technology released such as manufacturers compete to be able to offer consumers the best mobile experience. It hints at the start of a revolution in personal computing.

3 Free Agents Are Go!

3UK has launched 3 Free Agents, a programme that asks consumers to give free 3 PAYG SIMs to their friends and colleagues alike, with a cash incentive of £5 paid into a paypal account when a friend uses their SIM in a 3G handset and tops-up. The new SIM card holder also receives £2 extra credit.

The initiative encourages the ‘Agents’ to use their social networking presences as Ash Roots, head of online at 3 states,

“There is nothing new in giving away free SIMs as SIM only is a growing section of the PAYG market. But 3 Free Agents is the first UK initiative available now that rewards customers with cold hard cash for promoting and distributing SIMs using the internet.”

Numerous sites have posted about the project; the Guardiantweeted towards their article, with other news sites Mobile Newsand MarketingMagazine featuring the initiative. Pocket-Lint has more from Ash, GoMo divulges all the details around the tariffs involved and The Register has been quick to put it alongside O2’s giffgaff to see how it fares.

If this isn’t enough, 3g.co.uk, iXplora, Money Saving Woman andMobile Choice have also all posted on it.

Trusted Reviews – INQ Mini 3G

Review site Trusted Reviews have taken a look at the INQ Mini 3G and given it an overall score of 8/10.

As fans of the INQ1, Trusted Reviews and in particular reviewer Edward Chester is keen to see what the Mini offers. Although he finds faults with certain aspects of the phone, notably the camera and the viewing of full web pages, overall the device satisfies,

“it’s far too low on features for those that want a true mobile web experience and it’s a bit complicated for those that just want a simple cheap phone. However, if you can’t afford the former and just want to make sure you’re never out of the social loop, then you should definitely consider this phone.”

Electricpig Review Of The INQ Mini 3G

Spread across three pages is Electricpig’s review of the INQ Mini 3G.

“The social networking mobile is back in a new, smaller, faster, pumped up guise. Called the INQ Mini 3G, it adds Twitter and a 3G internet connection to a smaller package. But is it any good? Read our INQ Mini 3G review and we’ll give you our verdict.”

And true to their word that is exactly what they do! Comparisons are made with the INQ1, a device they refer to as breakthrough, and therefore expectations are high. Regardless of this the INQ Mini fares well. The only minor gripes are in relation to only packing in a 2-megapixel camera and the need for an adaptor to use headphones, which seems odd considering the phone’s young target audience.

Nevertheless Electricpig believes, “If you’re after the functionality of a smart phone on a budget, look no further.”
